Environmental Task Force

The City is committed to developing and implementing environmental policies and programs that will enable the City and its residents to meet their present needs without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
The Task Force presented its annual report to the City Council on May 8, 2023 at which time the City Council approved the 2023-2024 Work Plan:
- Finalize draft Building Electrification Ordinance for Council adoption
- Seek to incorporate “reach” requirements into the municipal code.
- Continue to pursue outreach efforts through hosting informational events and creating resources.
- Note: This item is currently on hold
- Recommend Council adopt resolution addressing Gas Leaf Blowers use by the City (UPDATE: Ordinance 688 was adopted by the City Council on October 10, 2023 and will go into effect July 1, 2024)

- Develop Ord. No. 688 and recommend Council adoption

- Recommend Council adopt ordinance reducing single-use food ware
- Continue to seek feedback from stakeholders, engage community & restaurateurs.
- Coordinate with Sustainable Lafayette to promote green business practices.
- Select recipients for Green Awards
- Promote the Lamorinda Sustainability Challenge on the Cleaner Contra Costa platform
- Future priorities:
- Identify priority projects to address water conservation
- Explore and identify opportunities to improve access to public EV charging
- Update the City's Environmental Action Plan (last edit 2017)
- Conduct a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory (last 2015)
- Increase collaboration between ETF and other commissions and committees to promote sustainability
- Increase public awareness that Lafayette is an idle-free city
The Environmental Task Force generally meets on the second Thursday of every month. Please see the City Calendar for specific dates. Meetings are generally held at the Lafayette City Offices, 3675 Mt. Diablo Boulevard, Suite 265, Lafayette, CA 94549.
Of note - Governor Newsom signed into law on October 9, 2021 "AB-1346 Air pollution: small off-road engines" This new law requires the California Air Resources Board to develop regulations, by July 1, 2022, to phase out Small Off Road Engines (SOREs) which are used primarily in lawn and garden equipment like gas-powered leaf blowers.
