Assembly Member Rebecca Bauer-Kahan worked with the California Department of Parks and Recreation to obtain $238,000 for the engineering design work associated with the Pleasant Hill Road Center Median Multi-Use Pathway project.  This project would provide a new separated and protected route for pedestrians and cyclists to use when traveling through the SR-24 interchange along Pleasant Hill Road between Mount Diablo Boulevard and Stanley Boulevard / Deer Hill Road.  If constructed, the project would close a multi-use pathway gap between northeast, central and southern Lafayette by providing a continuous pedestrian and bikeway network via Pleasant Hill Road that connects to the existing multi-use pathway along Pleasant Hill Road, south of Mt. Diablo Blvd, providing access to the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail.  The pathway would connect Acalanes High School, Lafayette Elementary School, Stanley Middle School, and Saint Mary's College via a continuous multi-use pathway.

The pathway is designed to be located in the center of Pleasant Hill Road to eliminate the need for pedestrians and bicyclists to cross State Route 24 on-ramps and off-ramps.  Currently the ramps are unprotected, which means that vehicles do not have to stop or slow down to connect between SR-24 and Pleasant Hill Road.  The pathway would be 14 feet wide and separated from vehicle traffic by vertical concrete barriers on either side. In locations where additional width is available, landscaping will be added between the pathway and the traffic barriers.  In order to accommodate this design, the on-street parking and existing bicycle lanes on Pleasant Hill Road between Mount Diablo Boulevard and Stanley Boulevard / Deer Hill Road would be eliminated.

Based on public input, the preferred design alternative would not result in any change to the existing vehicle lane configuration.  No lanes of traffic would be eliminated and no changes to the operation of the intersections would be required.

To date, funding has only been allocated for the current engineering design phase.

The project is similar in scope to the 3rd Avenue Pathway in San Mateo, which provides protected pedestrian and bicycle passage through the 3rd Avenue interchange with Highway 101.  However, the Pleasant Hill Road Pathway project would be designed and constructed to meet current state standards for multi-use pathways that require greater width.
