Slow Down Lafayette
Safer Streets for All
Traffic safety continues to be a top priority in the City of Lafayette, with the goal of reducing injuries to drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and other users of the road system. The city is following the Vision Zero approach, which is based on a shared responsibility across safe vehicles, safe speeds, safe road users, safe road designs, and post-crash care. Our goals are to reduce the number of collisions and, if a collision does happen, reduce the severity of injury that may occur. Lafayette’s traffic engineers, public works staff, parking officers, and police are all working together to continue making Lafayette safer.
We are all in this together – we need everyone’s participation.
The most important thing that each of us can do now is to drive
at or below the posted speed limits.
Safe Speeds
Speed is the most critical factor that affects the severity of injuries. The Police Department is expanding its traffic safety measures to help decrease speeds and reduce the number of crashes. While enforcement is part of how we reduce speed, our increased focus will be on real-time awareness and education.
“Speed is at the heart of a forgiving road transport system. It transcends all aspects of safety: without speed there can be no movement, but with speed comes kinetic energy and with kinetic energy and human error come crashes, injuries, and even deaths.”- Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development |
The Police Department has purchased several new pieces of traffic monitoring equipment. We have recently begun gathering traffic volume and speed information and, along with past collision information, are using a data-driven approach to identify the current highest risk locations in the city. Our system gathers summary data only and does not collect license plate or personally identifiable data.
Portable speed display signs and trailers will be stationed at locations to reduce the risk of crashes. This equipment also gathers non-personal information on traffic volumes and speed, providing the highest-risk times of the day and helping us address the safe speeds aspect of Vision Zero. We will be publicly sharing summary data at the bottom of this page.
Lafayette Police will also be providing regular public information on how to be a safer driver, pedestrian, and bicyclist on our roads. Part of this will be hints and tips on how to reduce the risk of injury crashes, and part will be safety information specific to Lafayette. Our goal of providing this information, and of providing the summary information on our data gathering and speed display work, is to support the Vision Zero goal of creating safer road users.
Safe Road Users
Shared responsibility is an important aspect of the Vision Zero approach. If drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians can do their part to be safe road users our common goal of Vision Zero will be that much easier to reach. We look forward to working with everyone in Lafayette to continue improving the safety of our streets.
