West Reach Creek Public Access Project
This project is identified in the Downtown Creeks Preservation, Restoration & Development Plan (adopted in 2017).
The project site is a 530-foot section of Lafayette Creek on the south side of Mt. Diablo Blvd. at the west end of downtown Lafayette. The City owns the property along a 75-foot-wide corridor including both sides of the creek on this reach. The site includes a heavily used pedestrian walkway from the downtown to the Lafayette Reservoir.
The City has received $900,000 in Federal Funding for expanding access and stabilizing the bank at the west end of Lafayette Creek. The proposed project includes, overlooks with viewing areas and seating for members of the public and interpretive signage to educate the public about creek health and habitat. Some street parking will be replaced by rain gardens for bioretention of street runoff. The bioretention basins will allow the City to treat a portion of the stormwater runoff from Mount Diablo Boulevard removing pollutants from the watershed. The project will also remove invasive plants from the creek banks and will include bank restoration and replanting. The project would provide a positive impact on the entire community and benefit the entire watershed through the reduction of pollutant and trash loads in Lafayette Creek.
