Discovering Opera: Puccini's Tosca

Would you believe an opera about an opera singer? Tosca is in love with the painter Cavaradossi, who also happens to be a revolutionary. Scarpia, the chief of the Roman police, wants Cavaradossi's head, and he has other designs on Tosca. But things get out of hand, and all the principals are dead by the final curtain. Puccini's music heightens the romance and the intensity of this gripping story. Lecturer Bradford Wade will give a guided tour of Tosca, with a description of the plot interspersed with musical examples. This lecture is given in conjunction with Opera San Jose's production of Tosca, September 12-27.
